beroCAPI: virtual ISDN for CAPI applications

The CAPI interface stays where the application expects it; the ISDN line moves to a gateway on the network.

Plenty of software still speaks CAPI and has no intention of learning SIP: fax servers, unified messaging systems, IVR and ACD applications, sometimes the one program a department has run for fifteen years. Traditionally that software needed an ISDN card in the same machine, which is precisely the reason it never made it into a virtual machine.

beroCAPI removes the card from the equation. It installs on the system, offers the same CAPI interface the application expects, and reaches the ISDN or analogue line over the LAN through a beroNet gateway or PCI card using SIP. The application does not change; the physical line simply stops being in the same box.

That has a practical consequence beyond virtualisation. One gateway can serve several applications, the line terminates in the rack rather than in a server, and moving the server no longer means moving copper. When the site later migrates to a SIP trunk, the CAPI application keeps running unchanged behind the gateway.

Licensing is per channel — between two and sixty — and per beroNet device. BNCAPI_SOHO is a fixed two-channel licence bound to a gateway serial number and is not upgradable; BNCAPI_Business is bound to the server’s MAC address and can be extended one channel at a time. The Fax Service Connector variants add a fax service for Windows workstations on top.

Features

  • Presents a CAPI V.5 interface to the application and talks SIP to a beroNet gateway or card over the LAN
  • Lets fax servers, unified messaging, IVR and ACD software move into a virtual machine
  • Works with ISDN and with analogue interfaces on the gateway side
  • Licensed per channel, from 2 to 60, and per beroNet device
  • The Fax Service Connector variants add a fax service for Windows workstations
  • Available as a software download with a 30-day trial
