uCPE

uCPE: telephony appliance with hypervisor

The branch server that is also the gateway: PBX, router and firewall as VMs, telephony interfaces on the same chassis.

uCPE

A branch office that runs its own PBX usually ends up with two boxes: a small server for the PBX software and a gateway for whatever lines come out of the wall. Two power supplies, two firmware paths, two things to explain on the phone when something breaks. The uCPE collapses that into one chassis.

The appliance is an x86 machine with the beroNet Hypervisor, a type 1 hypervisor based on Xen. The PBX runs as a virtual machine, and so can a router, a firewall or a CRM system if the site needs one. Common IP PBX systems can be installed straight from the beroNet Market through the web interface, which removes the usual detour over an installation medium and a monitor in a cupboard.

The hybrid models carry the telephony interfaces on the same board: BRI, PRI, FXS or FXO, with the same beroNet OS gateway behaviour as a standalone device. That is what makes the appliance interesting for an all-IP migration — the PBX moves into a VM while the existing ISDN line or the analogue fax stays connected to the same box, and the migration becomes a configuration change instead of a truck roll.

It is quiet and it does not move. Fanless, under 20 watts, no drives with rotating parts, in an aluminium housing that can be wall mounted in a technical room without a rack. Registration with beroCloud means the VMs and the gateway can be monitored and updated from wherever the administrator is.

Features

  • beroNet Hypervisor based on Xen, a type 1 hypervisor, so the VMs run on the hardware and not on a host OS
  • Runs any IP PBX as a virtual machine; the beroNet Market installs common systems directly from the web interface
  • Hybrid models carry the gateway ports on board, so a branch needs one device rather than a server plus a gateway
  • Registers with beroCloud: VM status, backup schedule and updates from anywhere
  • Fanless, under 20 W, built for continuous operation in a room without a rack
